Wickham is some 1475 km north of Perth and some 8 km from Roebourne in the mineral rich Pilbara Region. Cliffs Robe River Iron Associates built Wickham as a Company Town in 1970. Iron ore is Wickham's only industry. Wickham was built as the service town for the iron ore miners in the rich mineral region as Western Australia was opened up through the efforts of visionaries and giants such as Lang Hancock and Charles Court. Lang Hancock rightly became very, very rich and Charles Court was knighted and became Premier of Western Australia. Wickham is in the Shire of Roebourne and is part of the Pilbara Region of Australia's North West. In the 1980's the shire began to assume some civic responsibilities.Iron Ore is mined at nearby Pannawonica, processed in Wickham and exported from the nearby port at Cape Lambert. Situated on the shore of the beautiful Indian Ocean, Cape Lambert is the location of one of the highest and longest open ocean wharves in Australia, the Cape Lambert iron ore ship loading facilities and capable of loading three iron ore carries at one time.Named after John Clements Wickham the captain of survey ship Beagle that visited the area in the late 1830s.
Tank hill, lookout provides a view over the town of Wickham. Port Walcott, the local yacht club is based at Port Walcott. There are also secluded pristine sandy beaches. Port Samson is close by, with a close to shore coral reef, making for excellent snorkelling and safe swimming in calm waters. Fishing is excellent in these rich waters off the Pilbara Coast of Western Australia's North West.
