Just thirty minutes drive or a two and a half hour journey by river cruiser, the Swan Valley in the upper reaches of the Swan River is Western Australias oldest established wine growing region. The Swan Valley is home to over 30 wineries, the most famous being Houghton and Sandalford Wineries. Houghton Wineries is Western Australias biggest and most diverse producer. It is open to the public for cellar-door tastings and sales.
Sandalford is the oldest and largest family-owned winery and has been established since 1840. It too is open to the public for sales and tastings and has been awarded over 200 medals and trophies since 1994.

Many of the wineries offer fantastic alfresco dining and restaurant meals; some have galleries and beautiful grounds and gardens to explore and enjoy. The main varieties produced in the region include chardonnay, Shiraz, Chenin Blanc and verdelho.
Around the Swan Valley, there are some interesting and fun attractions. Caverhsam Wildlife Park has possibly the happiest and healthiest animals in Australia. The surroundings are especially designed for the natural comfort of the creatures with over 200 species of animals including their own-bred wombats, Tasmanian Devils and koalas and more exotic animals such as monkeys, llamas and buffalos. Kangaroos wander around.

The Swan Valley offers a number of gourmet food producers including the Swan Valley Chocolate and Cheese Factories. These add another dimension to the valley and work well to compliment the wineries in the area.

The Swan Valley Cheese Factory is worth a visit as it also sells olives, olive oil, breads, sun-dried tomatoes, coffee, tea, salami and herbs the perfect ingredients for a riverside picnic.
There are picturesque tram and train rides within the Whiteman Park in the Swan Valley that chug throughout the various terrains of the park.
