The award-winning Perth Zoo, situated in the suburb of South Perth has an endless array of Australian wildlife and exotic and rare animal species. Each exhibit closely replicates the animals natural environment, taking the visitor on a journey through settings such as the African Savannah, Asian Rainforest, and Australian Walkabout.
 
The South Perth Foreshore, otherwise known as Sir James Mitchell Park boasts stunning views of the Swan River and Perth city skyline. A beautiful stretch of parklands comprised of gazebos, picnic areas, bicycle and walk paths creates the perfect leisurely day out.
 
The Old Mill, built in 1835 is one of Perth's most famous historic landmarks. The early colonial building contains many interesting historic pieces and relics of the early pioneer days. For a further insight into the area, visitors can embark on the South Perth Heritage Trail, taking in many historic sites around the area.
 

South Perth Events


The beautiful riverside setting of South Perth is utilised every year for a number of major events. The annual City of South Perth Fiesta showcases works of art, theatre, live concerts, food, sporting activities and much more.
 
Drawing masses of crowds, the annual Lotterywest Skyworks is the biggest Australia Day celebration in Australia. Held over the Swan River, the South Perth foreshore boasts excellent panoramic views of the famous fireworks display.
 
Other events include the Youth Festival filled with music, workshops and activities for the young or young at heart, and the Perth Zoo Summer Season Events featuring popular twilight concerts in a magnificent setting.
 

South Perth Restaurants and Cafes


Comprised of a number of charming precincts, South Perth has a wide range of popular dining options. Mendes St is known as the restaurant precinct featuring views over the Swan River and Perth city skyline. The Angelo St precinct is lined with many lovely cafes, and both Mill Point Rd and the South Perth Esplanade feature many highly acclaimed restaurants offering a variety of cuisines.

The restaurant precinct of Mendes St is also known for its many great retail outlets. In amongst the many vibrant cafes, Angelo St boasts charming boutiques and interesting local shops.
 

South Perth - Near by


With its centrally located position, South Perth boasts close proximity to the many delights of the Perth CBD and surrounds. One of Western Australias leading public golf courses, Collier Park Golf Course is ideally situated in the neighbouring suburb of Como. A short drive northeast leads to the Burswood Entertainment Complex housing many great bars, restaurants, performance spaces and Western Australias only licensed casino. Just over the Swan River, the vibrant Perth CBD and the stunning Kings Park await.
 

South Perth History


The area along the river was first utilised for agriculture and dairy farming in 1831. Shortly after, a mill was built and a ferry was established to transport the public across the river. By the 1880s, market gardens were set up on the foreshore by Chinese immigrants. 1898 saw the establishment of the Zoological Gardens and the Royal Perth Golf Club, prompting the areas growth as a popular tourist destination. The district became a municipality in 1902, and granted city status in 1959.
