George Vancouver named the harbour after Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Augusta Matilda; who was born when he sailed into the waters in September 1791. The harbour was, for a long time, the only port of call for huge mail steamers delivering cargo from all over the globe, and holds a special place in Western Australias history.
In terms of size, depth and the amount of shelter it provides, Princess Royal Harbour is one of the worlds largest natural harbours.

A massive harbour, its huge jetties could accommodate vessels up to 45 metres in length. In its time it was the lifeline of Albany and the entire southwest until Fremantle, just south of Perth, grew in importance. Albany is still a major transportation hub and busy port. The principal imports of Albany are rock phosphate, petroleum products, sulphur and fertilizer. The main products to leave Princess Royal Harbour as exports are Grain silica sand and Woodchips.
Most of the harbour was just under two metres deep and significant areas on the north eastern side were dredged and deepened in 1901.
The Princess Royal Harbour Albany was the debarkation point for the convoy of Australian troops, which was to become renowned world wide as the ANZACs when it left Australia to go the first world war in November 1914.
The views across the harbour are spectacular; the large and very protected marine environment is usually teaming with boats of all sizes. The Torndirrup Peninsula embraces these waters; its extensive intertidal areas and shallow banks are home to much wildlife.
