Murchison is the only shire in Australia without a town. The settlement of Murchison was proclaimed in July 1988 and only Murchison Shire office, museum and single business, a roadhouse and caravan Park are located there.

Murchison River


The mighty Murchison River is 800 km long. The Murchison River rises out of the southern slopes of the Robinson Range, near the town of Meekatharra the Murchison flows west and south, flowing into the Indian Ocean at Kalbarri into Gantheaume Bay. Before reaching Kalbarri town, the Murchison River has carved out eighty kilometres of spectacular gorges. The Kalbarri Gorges are features of Kalbarri National Park. Murchison River was named for the British scientist Sir Roderick Murchison by explorer George Grey, who was wrecked at its mouth in 1839. George Grey later became Governor of South Australia
