An enchanting tropical oasis amongst the red dust of the Pilbara. Thousands of birds flock to this delightful spot, where ferns, palms and rushes grow in abundance. There are two long, deep, natural pools. The springs produce over 36 million litres of water a day, and provide the opportunity for swimming. The adjacent Chichester Ranges contain sediment-capped basalt ranges. It has rolling hills, hummocks of spinifex, white barked snappy gums on the uplands, and pale coolabahs along the water course.
3 hours drive south of Karratha, en route to Tom Price, lies Millstream-Chichester National Park, a 200,000ha area of basalt ranges and clay tablelands in the centre of the Pilbara district.
This area around the Chichester Range is famous for its beautiful landscape scenery of rolling hills, spectacular escarpments and winding tree-lined watercourses and activities such as picnicking, walking, fishing, swimming and canoeing.
Winter is the best time to visit; between May and August the climate is much cooler and experiences little rain, with temperatures during the day around 26C. The Chichester Ranges most noteworthy places include a beautiful gorge pool at Python Pool and scenery and aboriginal rock art at Black Rock Pool.
Working through the scenic highlights, next stop is the historic Millstream Station homestead, enjoy the leisurely Homestead Walk amongst the tropical oasis of Millstream. Clear, soft water from an underground aquifer creates a lush freshwater swimming spot at Chinderwarriner Pool.

Date palms, planted originally by Afghan camel drivers in the late 1800s, have now almost overtaken the natural vegetation of pale cajeputs and pretty river gums. The native Millstream Palm and the Sturt Desert Pea can be found here. This area is also very important to the local Yinjibarndi Aboriginal people. Millstream was used as a place for ceremonial rituals, gathering special acacia woods for hunting weapons and as a rich source of food and water in both the dry and wet seasons.
