Named after Captain Middleton who arrived in 1834, bringing Governor James Stirling, the steady surf at Middleton Beach provided a handy method for off-loading supplies and stock into shore as some of the larger boats could not navigate the entrance of the harbour.

Ellen Cove is located near Middleton Beach, another magical beach spot popular with beachgoers for its picnic, BBQ and playground facilities. Whales can be spotted right from the beach! The southern right whales play out behind the breakers and often visit this close to the shore on their way to southern breeding grounds. For those who enjoy fishing, anglers can cast out and reel in salmon, skippy, herring, sand whiting, leatherjacket and silver bream. Other popular fishing areas are Cheynes Beach, Two Peoples Bay, Princess Royal Harbour, and Oyster Harbour or try the King River for freshwater fish.
