Madura is located some 1255 km from Perth and 529 km from Norseman. For travellers across the Nullarbor Plain Madura offers the first luxury of desalinated fresh water on tap. The Madura Pass, to the west of Madura was at one time considered the most dangerous section of the Nullarbor crossing with its steep cutting descending from the low scrub of the Hampton Tableland to coastal plain below. Inspite of the extreme the loneliness and isolation of the area or perhaps because of it! a small property was established in the early 1870's near a hot spring. Horses were bred there, then mustered and taken to the coast where they were shipped to the subcontinent for the British Army in India.

To the northwest of Madura are the Mullamullang Caves, which are reputedly larger than the Cocklebiddy caves. The old Madura Homestead is to the west of the Madura Roadhouse on an old dirt road.
