One of the earliest settlements in Western Australia, Kojonup is a small country town maintaining a healthy blend of old and new, urban and rural. 256km southeast or just two and a half hours drive from Perth en route to Albany, this quaint but bustling country town offers excellent facilities and accommodation in a beautiful rural setting.

Kojonup History

In 1837, local Aboriginals directed Alfred Hillman to a large freshwater spring on his route exploring the lands from King George Sound Albany to the Swan River Settlement Perth. This natural spring and the abundance of good stone for building materials urged Hillman to recommend the area be settled. And so, Kojonup was founded, the name coming from a local Aboriginal word Koja meaning stone axe.

Originally a small military post was set-up in 1845 to protect travelers and the mail on the lonely road from Albany to Perth. The Military Barracks were founded on the site of the freshwater spring and is one of the oldest surviving military buildings in Western Australia. In near-perfect condition, it now houses the Kojonup Pioneers Museum and through its relics from the past, it tells the history of Kojonup.

The Kojonup Spring is also home to a lovely picnic area, beautifully presented with a neat little bridge and inviting pool that lies at the top end of town. The Sundial in Hillman Park is interesting, as is Walshs Cattle Complex. The many streams that run through the shire from the granite outcrops in the hills surrounding Kojonup supply delightful valley pools. A wide variety of flora and fauna exist in harmony around Kojonup.

Kojonup Wildflowers

Over 60 species of delicate orchids, different marsupials and kangaroos and also a variety of bird life from enormous emus to small, blue wrens and colourful flocks of rosellas.

Kojonup prides itself on its mix of the modern with the traditional and boasts facilities such as a swimming pool, squash and tennis courts, several playing fields, lawn bowls and a number of horse-riding and equestrian activities.

Kojonup Accommodation

Great farmstay accommodation can be found at Kemmingup, a real working farm where you can feed the kangaroos, alpacas, emus and other farm animals and enjoy a full country breakfast daily. Visit Kojonup to step back in time but it seems, not too far back, to experience a unique West Australian country settlement.
