The area was named for Henry Camfields fathers farm and estate called Burswood shortly after his arrival to the Swan River Colony in 1829. It then became known as Burswood Island in 1841 when a canal was cut through the peninsula to shorten the trip to the settlement at Guildford. Western Australia's first golf course was built at Burswood Island in1895. By 1899, the Ascot Racecourse was built and the Burswood Hotel and casino were established in 1985.
