Just as Albany was the first settlement in Western Australia, the Great Southern Wine region played its part in establishing Western Australias reputation in production of fine wines.
Almost without exception, Plantagenet and Goundrey for instance the wineries are family affairs; often the owner is the winemaker.
In 1968 Mike Smith was one of the original planters of the seeds of what is becoming recognized to be a great Riesling area. Plantagenet Winery is situated north of Albany, outside Mount Barker and is now one of the forty odd wineries that thrive in the Great Southern region. Plantagenet is now owned by the old established since early settlement days Fremantle liquor distribution company, Lionel Sampson and Son.
Alkoomi, on the Frankland River was established in 1971. Alkoomi has its central cellar door in Lower Stirling Terrace, Albany as well as its winery cellar door in Wingebellup Road, Frankland.
In the Porongurup National Park, Castle Rock is an outstanding geological feature. Castle Rock Estate in the Porongurups is a small winery producing some delightful wines, especially the Rieslings.
Forest Hill Vineyard, again just outside of Mount Barker, was the site of the experimental vineyard for the region in 1965. The Forest Hill Winery is situated down the road somewhat, being just outside of Denmark, to the south. The winery produces Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet sauvignon.
There are some forty odd wineries in this Great Southern Wine Region, many with restaurants serving such local delicacies as fresh marron and locally made cheeses.
