    Fremantle Prison

    History and mystery abounds in this state heritage listed prison, now maintained as an attraction.

    The Fremantle Prison opened as a tourist attraction in January 1992 and has since won several major tourism awards. The Prison is a unique venue because of its convict and contemporary history from 1850 to 1991.

    The Prison was built by convict labour between 1850 and 1860 and was decommissioned in November 1991 after almost 140 years as a working Prison.

    It is now open to the public seven days a week as a tourist and heritage site suitable for all ages and nationalities.
